God is NOT a human

Let's just say God is not human and we should be thankful for that.

God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through? NUMBERS 23:19

Reflection

Let’s just start with this, God is not a human. Sure, God became a human, specifically a man, through Jesus but God is not man and he isn't human. Can we agree on that?

To me, this is a very important and necessary understanding. Why? Because humans, in particular men, can and do change their minds. They also sometimes don’t follow through on things they say they will. That isn’t to say that makes you a bad man or person it simply makes you ... human.

Now, let’s see if we can agree on this. It is awesome that God is not human. Why? Because a consistent never changing ultimate creator of everything is kind of important.

Just imagine if God suddenly said "I’ve changed my mind, it’s okay for you to steal, cheat, and kill. Go for it. No consequences. Just do whatever you want." Of course, it sort of seems like that is what is happening now here on earth. However, while that might be happening I’m not so sure God is good with it.

There are stories in the Bible that show some civilizations went down that path and it didn’t end well for them. It’s not that God didn’t love them. Their free will took them down some dark roads. For those that didn’t turn toward God, well it seems there is a place they go.

Reflecting on how Jesus lived during the time that was recorded he didn’t fret over the ones that didn’t follow. He simply showed up. Taught people. Gave some very good advice on how to live. Kept moving on. He didn’t seem to feel sorry or have any emotion towards the ones that didn’t follow. He did get a bit ticked off at some in and outside the temple. But as far as people not getting it. Well, that was up to them. You can decided to believe or not believe. You can decide to follow or not follow.

To me, Jesus’s model and knowing that God is not human make it very clear. So what is that? Understand that God is always there, loving you, wanting to be in relationship with you, and staying constant so as we humans keep being human there is always an anchor to grab hold off. To hang on for dear life during the storms of life. A center that allows you to live a life rich in experiences knowing so long as you keep your eyes there, you will never be too far away.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for being you. Thank you for sending us Jesus. For all those men and woman who made the Bible possible. The stories. The examples. Thank you for the people in our lives who live in a way that draws us to them and to you. Help us become more like them. Help us to stay centered and connected to you. To anchor our lives on Your Word and the constant that You are. That You never change. You never break your promise. You are always ready for us to be ready for You. Please keep us, our families, and our friends safe. We pray in the name of Jesus our Savior and Lord. Amen.
