A Disagreement with Paul

Paul writes in Romans that Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. While true, I believe so much more was done.

“When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.” Romans 5:6 NLT

Reflection

I can't entirely agree with Paul here. I believe Jesus did so much more than this. He allowed us to have a relationship with God. An intimate encounter that we can trust and rely on every day of our life. He left us the Holy Spirit to guide and comfort us. He left us an experience, a model, to teach us how to be better people.

The glimpse we have of Jesus as a human is a person who loved. He was always willing to help those around him, no matter the circumstances. He wanted them to understand and appreciate how he did what he did. His willingness to embrace physically and mentally ill sinners was the model. But how He did it with grace, empathy, and a natural touch of kindness is how we should measure our lives.

We will never be exactly like Jesus, but getting close is sufficient. We have spiritual gifts that allow us to thrive in the best way for us and best for the circumstances. Using those gifts when needed makes all the world of difference.

In a world where not everyone will be this way, it is essential for those of us who can be to be. That we do not let the world harden our hearts. We live past the world the way our Lord and Savior taught us.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus. Thank you for the model He demonstrated. Thank you for bringing people into our lives that model what love can be like. Please help us stay focused on you and not this world. Thank you for everything. I pray this in the name of Jesus, my Savior and Lord. Amen.
